Not old enough

Some folks have asked me if I was born with a moustache I guess because they have never seen me without one. As a matter of fact I was not born with one and here’s the proof.

I was 18 when I first grew a moustache. It was a Centennial project (1967) at university. Back then it was dark brown. I was studying geography and philosophy and my heroes were Richard Burton the explorer and Bertrand Russell the philosopher (in the background drawn by my brother-in-law Christopher Dann).

It stayed on my face, trimmed but not shaven for 15 years. Then on a winter holiday, in a fit of silliness (and perhaps too much rum) I cut it off! My partner at the time was shocked, very shocked. We went out for dinner at a place we had visited numerous times before and the owner did not recognize me. He asked her if I was her son! Well that did not go down too well and needless to say I started growing it back the very next day.

I had great intensions to cut it off again 15 years later (1997) but the year came and went and I guess I just forgot. By this time it had inadvertently become somewhat of a trademark and I had my friend Wes Olson sketch one for my business card and letterhead.

Anyone can have one

Every once in a while I get a great surprise at a wedding when more moustaches appear, and I know that all is well with the world.

Too much fertilizer

I couldn’t resist getting behind the wind sock of Michael Klekamp’s video camera at a recent wedding on a windy day in Central Park. Maureen says it looks like I got too much fertilizer on it when I was doing my make-up.

Same sex marriage in Banff

In July 2005 the Canadian government legalized marriages between same sex couples. The federal definition of marriage in Canada is simply “the lawful union of two persons to the exclusion of all others”.

I am pleased to provide service to all same sex couples who wish to make their union official.

Many Canadians have come forward to be married as same sex couples. The wording is still being refined. It can be spouse and spouse, husband and husband, wife and wife, or simply lawfully wedded partners in life.

Over the past five years I have had numerous couples from the United States, Australia, New Zealand and England make their bond “official” in Canada in hopes of someday being recognized in the same way in their home country.

I do not advertise on the Rainbow network or other gay friendly commercial websites simply because I do not feel that commercial exploitation of this situation is appropriate.

The big catch

Weddings and Fishing

Weddings and fishing have a few things in common. Both sexes talk about “the big catch”!

Some guys feel “lured in”, and for a few it’s like “jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire”.

When it is time to be married, “You can’t keep fishing around” … “You are hooked” …  “It’s time to take the plunge”.

It is a catch, and it’s a commitment.

The big thing to remember in getting married is that it is not “catch and release”. This one’s a keeper!

Looks like she hooked one

There is no reason not to combine your passions. If fishing is something you do together and find enjoyment in, then why not share the happiness on the ultimate day of “sharing happiness”, your wedding day? How often do you have the opportunity to sign a legal document while you are having fun?

There are a few fellows out there who have said under their breath while being married “I’d rather be fishing”, well now is your chance.

Fishing weddings, they are unique, they are special.

Cinderalla, it fits!

Ben and Caren came from Wales to be married on their ski holiday at Ski Lake Louise.  This is the first ski wedding in fifteen years that I have had the pleasure of watching the groom perform the old “Cinderella” routine to make certain he has the right one.

It began as quite a blue sky day but the weather quickly moved in to obscure the mountain tops, but this did not take away from the celebration. Hair by Symiotics in Banff.

The audience just got bigger

Unfortunately not all of their friends and family could accompany them, but Ben and Caren found a way to include them all, even in their absence. The cut out portraits are pretty close to life size.

Canada is a young country but we do have some traditions that we do our best to uphold. One of them is to make “snow angels” whenever the opportunity is appropriate. These are likely the best Welsh snow angels ever conceived.

Traditional finale

During the ceremony the best man and bridesmaid flanked the bride and groom in Triangle pose, framing the couple appropriately.

Recently I was performing a wedding ceremony on the terrace at The Juniper Inn . I did a double take when I recognized the mother of the groom as one of the persons in my regular Yoga class with Mystee Hunter at the Banff Springs Hotel. After the ceremony it did not take long for the groom’s mom, sister and myself to entertain the guests with a few yoga maneuvers.
